21st Century Barn Raising

A barn raising is an event during which community men come together to assemble a barn for one or more of its households, with the support of women. The event was particularly common in 18th- and 19th-century rural North America. Nowadays there really is no need for a barn, at least for our family, so instead we raised a play set. I sent out an evite to a bunch of people to see who could be of assistance and we had a pretty good turn out. Peter and I went to the backyard around 8:30 to get things started. Around 9 we had our first helpers arrive and then more came throughout the day. Liz and I separated and sorted all the wood so that it would be easy to find the pieces that were needed. My friend, Cindy, took the girls to Lowes to do a Build and Grow project so they would be out of the way for a little while. When she returned I took Bresa to a doctor's appointment and then picked up food for crew on the way back. When I returned, the play set had really taken form and there were more people helping out. We all took a break from the labor and enjoyed some Publix subs, potato salad and chips. When lunch was over we stopped a bit longer to sing Happy Birthday to Javan (whose birthday is tomorrow) and have some cupcakes. Christina and Noah were helping out by making the pieces that could be built separate from the main structure and then added on later. Peter worked on the main building with the help of Andy, Paul, Brian, and Woody. Kelly waxed up the screws that were needed and prepped them with locking nuts so they were ready to go. I did a bunch of the part and wood fetching as well as making sure everyone was fed and had a cold drink. As time went on a few people went home and pretty soon it was just Peter, Andy, Brian and I. We had worked a good 10 hours and we were losing light so we decided to call it a day. Most of the structure was complete but it still requires a few more hours of work. We had a great time putting it together and even though we were working we had a lot of fun. Peter and I really appreciate all the help that everyone offered and we were reminded once again of how very blessed we are with all our friends and community.
